Trout in the Classroom Aquarium In Place

October 14, 2014

January 2015 Update

The eggs arrived overnight from Utah on December 11, 2014. They were taken that afternoon and put into our tank that was ready to receive the precious cargo. With the tank being perfect on temp and chemical levels the little eggs started hatching in just a few days. Each day a few more hatched. Then on January 5th when the kids returned from the holiday vacation they were delighted to find a tank full of little baby trout. Trout that they are going to be responsible for raising until they are released in the spring. In a couple of weeks the kids will begin feeding the fish and after that we will have to take the number of trout in the tank down about half. Because once they start eating and eliminating their waste, the alkaline levels in the water will raise fast. Too many would cause a major die off of all the trout. Each month we will keep you posted on our growing family.

November 2014

We got our tank set up at the Rabun County Primary School for our first time participating in the Trout in the Classroom Project. The eggs are set to arrive on Thursday December 11, 2014. We are all so excited to get this program rolling for the kids. So much more to report in the next newsletter.

This is been so well received in other states that they are making it a part of the required curriculums. Trey McFalls, Boy Scout and son of Jerry McFalls, is going to oversee the project for both extra credit at school and working on a merit badge for the scouts. Tune in next month when we really get cranked up after our trout eggs arrive. Rabun TU is passing it on!!
